1. Snapping turtles may be taken from the wild in Massachusetts in accordance with a permit issued by MassWildlife. There is a fee for such a
permit, and special conditions may be imposed. No Snapping Turtles taken under such a permit shall be less than 6 inches in carapace
length.

1. There is a closed season on the hunting, fishing, taking and possession of the following reptiles and amphibians: Blanding's Turtle, Bog
Turtle, Diamondback Terrapin, Eastern Box Turtle, Northern Red-bellied Cooter, Spotted Turtle, Wood Turtle or any Sea Turtle.
2. A bag limit and possession limit of 2 each of the following species may be taken from January 1 to December 31: Eastern Musk Turtle and
Painted Turtle. There is no limit on Snapping Turtles.
3. There are no limitations on hunting or taking hours for reptiles and amphibians.
4. No hunting or fishing license or permit is required for the taking of reptiles and amphibians (except for the commercial taking of snapping
turtles).
5. It is unlawful to sell any wild caught turtle or parts thereof (except Snappers).
6. Reptiles and amphibians may be taken with firearm, archery, hook-and-line, hand net, cage or box trap, or by hand. Except, they may
not be taken by firearm or bow on Sundays or may not be taken by poison, explosives, seines, gill nets, or fyke nets.

NATIVE SPECIES
1. It is unlawful to possess any Blanding's Turtle, Bog Turtle, Diamondback Terrapin, Eastern Box Turtle, Northern Red-bellied Cooter, Wood
Turtle, Spotted Turtle, Argentine (Chaco) Tortoise, Gopher Tortoises & related species, Pancake Tortoise, Red-eared Slider or any Sea
Turtle.
2. A person shall not have in his possession at any time a live reptile or amphibian unless they hold either a propagator’s license to possess,
maintain, buy, sell, offer for sale or have in possession for the purpose of sale, reptiles or amphibians or, a dealer’s license to possess,
buy, sell, or offer for sale, fish, birds or mammals lawfully taken or lawfully propagated outside the commonwealth or lawfully propagated
within the commonwealth. Each license issued by the director shall specify the degree to which reptiles or amphibians, or parts thereof,
may be propagated, cultivated, maintained, disposed of, or dealt in.
3. A person licensed under the above authority may transfer live reptiles or amphibians by sale, gift, donation or otherwise, only to another
licensed person.
4. The possession limit for Eastern Musk Turtles and Painted Turtles is 2 per species. There is no limit on Snapping Turtles.
5. All turtles, except rare species and those specifically listed as unlawful may be purchased from pet retailers. These turtles may never be
released into the wild.
